Day 14: Is there anything that he or she does culturally that takes you by surprise? Describe.

Hmm…he’s a typical white guy lol. I guess subculturally speaking, he is soooo into comic books. His interest in them took me by surprise initially. He can turn any conversation into one about comics.

Day 13: How do your family and friends respond to your relationship?

I don’t introduce a man to my family unless it’s serious. As a result, they’re fine with Beau. He’s also the first boyfriend that has met most of my family including grannies and uncles. My mom says some slick ish like, “I’m still holding out for a strong black man.” I think she’s semi-joking 😑

My friends seem to like Beau too. They always say how happy we look and how great we are for one another 😊

Day 12: Describe a difficult time on a racial stand point that the two of you have faced.

Hmm…sometimes I find it difficult to explain certain issues with him. For example, the Mike Brown story. At first, he asked if I was sure I wanted to discuss that with him. I said, yes. Heard his point view, that of which was from what he read from the Ferguson police department. Then, I showed him the other side of the story and he understood.

We clash on some things because he really didn’t realize how different Black people view and live in this world. Another example would be Black representation in the media. He honestly believed that Black people were not interested in comics, cosplay, sci-fi, fantasy and etc. because he never met any and hardly ever saw it. So I directed him to Tumblr and showed him this world. Explained to him about the whitewashing of traditionally ethnic characters in the media. I explained White privilege to him, that White is considered default, and that he never really has to consider his race because it is something that will rarely come up with him. He’s coming around though and is definitely open to learning about issues concerning Black people.

Even as I fight back tears day after day since Mike Brown’s murder, I watch white people go about their days without a care, white privilege unassailable and protected by state sanctioned violence against black bodies. I see their indifference, or, alternatively, their intense racialized fear that…

I definitely relate. Such a good read.

White privilege is being able to shoot up a movie theater and leave alive in the back of a cop car. It’s driving around in the BMW daddy bought you killing because you felt you were entitled to women’s bodies & afterwards the media painting you as not a criminal but rather a poor sad situation of a person suffering from mental health issues.

But if you are a PoC you’re one trip to the corner store and a warning shot to the back of the head away from being a hash tag on tumblr.

Well damn. Somebody said it!
